Title:
Algers, Winslow & Western SD9!!!!
Description:
My only time I witnessed an old Algers, Winslow & Western SD9 pulling a train!!!! Taken at the Indiana Eastern Railroad yard, July 25, 2019. I also saw AWW SD9 #205 stored on an overgrown track and not being used. I do not know if it will run again. Indiana Eastern got a high hood GP38-2 that was being prepped for paint at this time! They started using it later in 2019. I do not know if AWW SD9 #206 is being used. A worker said it was going to be back up power to the GP38-2! However, recently (March 2020) sister railroad Squaw Creek Southern scrapped the other two AWW SD9s (there were 4 total)! Glad I got two on this trip. Photo taken with permission. Union Pacific "Golden Spike" ceremony
Description:
Union Pacific has their "Golden Spike" ceremony in Odgen, Utah, May 9, 2019. "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 and "Living Legend" 4-8-4 # 844! UP ordered 25 "Big Boy" locomotives between 1941 and 1944. The frame is “articulated” with two sets of driving wheels, perfect for negotiating tight mountain turns. 4014 was built in 1941, last steamed in 1959. It eventually was restored to operation, converted to run with oil and put in service specifically for use during the anniversary celebrations in 2019. 844 was UP's last steam locomotive purchased in 1944 and has never been retired and also was converted to run with oil. "Spike 150 Train"
Description:
The "Spike 150 Train" heads east through the Wasatch Mountains at Taggarts, Utah, May 12, 2019. "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 leads the train! UP ordered twenty five of "Big Boy" locomotives between 1941 and 1944. The frame is “articulated” with two sets of driving wheels, perfect for negotiating tight mountain turns. 4014 was built in 1941. 4014 last steamed in 1959 and eventually was restored to operation, converted to run with oil and put in service specifically for use during the anniversary celebrations in 2019. TSBY 1977
Description:
Here is an "Original" Tuscola and Saginaw Bay Railway engine! This is one of two original locomotives the RR had when they started in Vassar, MI area in 1977! Amazingly it still looks great from the last "Touch-ups" that TSBY did before GLC! This engine does not run and is only used as a "Bumper Post" when Lear Corp. has cars in the siding as seen here, August 23, 2019. Photo taken with permission. UP "Challenger" #3985 at West Chicago
Description:
The special Union Pacific steam train is seen departing West Chicago, Illinois, June 18, 2002 heading west. It is headed to Saint Paul, Minnesota to be displayed later. At this time the 4-6-6-4 “Challenger” steam locomotive, #3985, is the largest operating in the world. There are two sets of driving wheels and the frame is “articulated.” This way the wheels turn separately of the main frame to operate better where the track has tight turns. This engine was built in 1943. UP retired it from regular service in 1957. It was restored to operation once again in 1981 for use on special trips by UP. They converted it to run with oil instead of coal in 1990. UP ordered 105 “Challenger” locomotives between 1936 and 1943. They are about 122 feet long and weigh more than 1 million pounds. 3985 is the only one in operation of the two remaining. (Canon 35mm S.L.R. camera, Kodak Gold 800 print film)

Union Pacific #119 steam engine replica!!!!
Description:
Two authentic 4-4-0 steam engine replicas are seen at the Golden Spike National Historical Site at Promontory Summit, Utah in August 2003. Here is where two railroads, Union Pacific and Central Pacific, met on May 10, 1869 forming the first USA “Transcontinental Railroad.” This allowed the railroads across the nation to be connected. The ceremonial last spike driven was made of gold. The steam engine on the left, #60, represents Central Pacific Railroad. Engine #119 represents Union Pacific Railroad. Both locomotives operate with live reenactments (Canon T-50 35mm camera, Kodak Gold 200 print film).

Retired Alcos
Description:
Retired Alcos (EMD not visible in this pic) at the Saginaw Roundhouse, Saginaw, Michigan. Engine #469 is still in its old Detroit & Mackinac Railway colors. They were the 1st Railroad to fully dieselize from steam! This is one of their 1st diesels! I've never seen it run, this is the best that I've done! It's worth saving of course! Photographs taken here under strict permission guidelines from an employee who will remain unknown. This is not public property of course. "Semaphore Night!!!!"
Description:
"Time Exposure." A southbound coal train was seen passing the old operating semaphore signals at Brighton Park, Illinois in May 2007. The headlights of a northbound train shine behind it. These signals were the last manually operated semaphores in the nation, raised and mowered by mechanical levers in the shack. They displayed the signal aspects that were needed. New electronic replacement signals are seen in the background. Many different rail lhnes operate through this crossing. Date approx. (Canon AE-1 35mm camera, Kodak Ultramax 400 print film)
