A special double-headed steam excursion on the Iowa Interstate crosses the Mississippi River southbound on September 15, 2006. It is arriving in Rock Island, Illinois. These two 2-10-2 steam engines, #6988 and #7081, came from the Ji-Tong Railroad in China. They were built in China from 1985 to 1986. Iowa Interstate acquired both of them in June 2006. Trips with these locomotives were arranged for "RiverWay 2006." This is a four day celebration honoring 150 years of the first railroad bridge crossing the Mississippi River nearby. We made it for the 2024 Galesburg RR Days V.I.P. Bus Tour. My first time going on this! Well worth it, except this was the first time no photos allowed inside the shops! BNSF Railway locomotives rest in the yard at Galesburg, Illinois, taken June 30, 2024. Retired locomotive #1256 is a fuel efficient 3GS21B Genset. It was built in 2007 by National Railway Equipment. These are built with three smaller engines which needed frequent maintenance. BNSF and other Class One railroads have recently retired most of their Genset locomotives. We had a great Railroading Heritage of Midwest America Silvis shop tour during the great "Walk Amongst the Giants" event! So great to see an SD50 still in Conrail colors in 2025! Rare! The month June is 25 yard since CR was split between NS/CSX! This engine is used by NRE for load testing. The first RRHMA public event after opening to the public!
