Title: |
3985 "Challenger" |
Description: |
The special Union Pacific steam train is seen departing West Chicago, Illinois, June 18, 2002 heading west. It is headed to Saint Paul, Minnesota to be displayed later. At this time the 4-6-6-4 “Challenger” steam locomotive, #3985, is the largest operating in the world. There are two sets of driving wheels and the frame is “articulated.” This way the wheels turn separately of the main frame to operate better where the track has tight turns. This engine was built in 1943. UP retired it from regular service in 1957. It was restored to operation once again in 1981 for use on special trips by UP. They converted it to run with oil instead of coal in 1990. UP ordered 105 “Challenger” locomotives between 1936 and 1943. They are about 122 feet long and weigh more than 1 million pounds. 3985 is the only one in operation of the two remaining. That is me (RLJ II) on the left videotaping at age 18. UP 3985 side part |
Description: |
We had a great Railroading Heritage of Midwest America Silvis shoip dtour during the great "Walk Amongst the Giants" event! The first RRHMA public event after opening to the public! NRE still owns the building and uses part of it and leases some to RRHMA! In a couple years NRE will vacate! I was happy to catch some NRE diesels here!
